check the stem for corn maggots. Hopefully you watered in some pest control.

Yes looks like dreaded seed corn maggot got it. Does it seem to be more prevalent this season in some regions due to wet cold soils even though some had heaters and/or insecticides?

Maggot got the 2144 for sure, which was the same planting site. Didn't find any evidence of them when I checked the stem, and thought (perhaps naively) that they weren't such an issue as the plant got older. I watered in more merit today, but both plants had gotten a few weeks ago (though we did have a big rain that could have flushed anything that was left in the soil out).

Sorry to hear but seems they're still lurking there until soil warms up and they bugger off eventually into a fly or whatever they may become! They're vicious got me once years ago, had no idea at the time, now just wait it out until ground has warmed up. Good luck
