I almost always remove everything (tendril, 'protector leaf' and next level of vine) from around any pumpkin, anywhere, with a box cutter. It just makes it all easier in the long run, prevents abrasion against the fruit and I can't remember the third one, lol. I had not thought to use rubber bands for any vine adjustments; That's crazy, as I am in AWE of rubber bands for what they can do for us for next to nothing. You could use the actual blossom to attach a RB to for a greater effect as the fruit adjusts (very beneficial, I'll bet, for when the fruit is so tight to the vine) and do check to see where the fine line is for how much pull to apply - like trying to not strip a bolt or nut, lol. Up to you, of course and I'd get a piece of anY man-made material under these 500# ambitions. I had a 548 or so and a 498 or so on one plant, butt there have been MUCH bigger ones than that that have been grown doubly.
