I'm thinking auxins/cytokinins were insufficient so the plant put it on standby. I think Andy W posted something scientific about cucumbers being able to do this, they put the fruit on the backburner for a week or two then when conditions improve they start to cook again.

I had this happen my first year. I let it grow out and got a 2+ lbs mater. (Probably what it would of been normally) It will be interesting.
