Stem splits often don't go into the cavity as the flesh is very thick where the stem meets the pumpkin unlike a BES. The biggest issue is infection as the cavity formed can be moist and warm and a great spot for fungus to grow. Get some thin clear flexible aquarium tubing and blow compressed air into the cavity (buy a bubbler at aquarium store) to keep it dry. Also if you have powdered sulphur or another anti-fungal dust the area. Stem splits are common among the big growers as the pumpkin balloons up between day 30 and 60. Good luck!

Yeah, the top growers have gotten over it sometimes. So the good news is you're becoming more like Travis G. Bad news is you inherited another hurdle.
