You might want to check out Don Crews diary posts mid July about how to deal with stem splits. In my experience we usually cross cut 1/4 inch down into the pumpkin side of the split to prevent extension into the flesh and then put an aquarium house air bubbler on or into the split to keep it as dry as possible. Some hi-tech growers get a video probe device that attaches to their phone to inspect inside the split.
