Cruel ending but it seems like something was a bit off with your soil, I realize its not clear what the issue was. This has been a rough year for many growers. I would recommend growing a variety of things and starting with a weed free garden. For myself I'd like to put beneficial cover crops in ahead of time because it's so much work and if the soil isnt tuned just right then even with ones best efforts its a big uphill struggle to reach ones goal. In fact it could be an easy hobby, but only if the soil is perfect.
