I'm not entirely sure of the physical stress the surrounding tissue has on the blossom end, but I'm thinking that 'blossom down' rather than 'blossom up' alleviates this stress. In other words, blossom down is less likely to split than blossom up. I could be wrong of course, the only way to tell is through analysis of splits that have occured over the years, if someone has the time to do so!

Ideally blossom down disperses the weight away from the actual flower nub where the walls tend to be the thinnest. If the blossom is in the center of the pumpkin the weight above has to be transferred through the blossom end which in theory should put more stress than if the blossom curled under.
