Maybe smother them with cardboard or something? Plywood? They look strong enough to lift cardboard.

Idk what this weed is, we call it pigweed. It came in off of horse manure years back. I just pull it as the plant grows, but would love it if it never grew 🤣

Well they say cover crops are beneficial, even weeds are a net positive to the soil, now just a question of how to get rid of it.

Try a cool weather cover crop at beginning of season, more than recommended amount of seeds for space. Weeds won't have room to grow.

CB - That was the plan for me this year, butt this weed is a mean one and I'll be using Glyphosate @ 8 oz. per gallon of H2O from my backpack, RoundUp sprayer, lol. I never did get protective, large boxes for the plants whilst I fumigate, lol---eg

That weed is "Lamb Quarters" very aggressive but usually easy to pull, unfortunately robs the soil of nutrients/moisture. Spraying a herbicide further out should be fine, but do not close to vines as possible drift and vines also reach come into contact with sprayed weeds. "Pigweed" is very similar but much harder to pull. I realize the names overlap in some regions.

I'll take lambs quarters over pig weed anyday although they say pig weed is edible.

Countryboy: I tried clover this spring, it didnt sprout in time. We've done oats and peas before, still dont sprout before the weed does. Perhaps I can find something, but it has to be very aggressive.
Howard: Interesting, i didnt know the proper name, my grandfather called it pigweed so thats what we've called it. Im not a huge fan of herbicides, because as much as it does leach from the soil, any residual would be hinder the plant. Maybe i do some research into that.

I did Pacific gold and Kodiak mustard as well as snow peas. 2 lbs for about 1000sq ft. Way over. I just checked my phone and I planted it 4/10 in central Massachusetts and it was fully up 4/25. As I weed wacked the flowers, the smaller, stunted and cramped plants continued to grow in place of same. Maybe I fell into some luck cuz its been a constant weed blocker while keeping soil biology dancing the jig
