I've been thinking about this. So what if you just put like 5 pipes in the ground with or three or whatever and put high concentrations of nkp ca etc. and like small holes so the nutrients come out slowly over time. You space these around the plant and let the plant use its roots to choose what it needs. Maybe I'll try that on one of the tomatoes this year

Growers used to throw some WOW packs under their plants. I was always confused about whether it made more sense to keep the fertilizer in the pack or rip the pack open and spread it around in the soil. One way or another, I think tomato roots are designed to find the fertilizer. But I could write at least whole page on the additional questions that arise.
The wow packs were sold as a slow release fertilizer so the instruction was to throw them under the plant as they were, which was a fertilizer in a permeable teabag of sorts. I did break some open, but to break them open was not really what you were paying for.
