My soil test in Feb 2024 showed 15.5 percent organic matter with Western Labs stating this was "very high."
It seems the big growers are always adding more and more organic matter.
Any opinions on this? Thanks.

Different types of organic matter have different effects in the soil... couldn't everything from humic/fulvic acids to raw wood chips be considered organic matter? Nutrient availability is what matters ultimately?

Joe Ailts whos a agronomist says 5% is ideal and over 10% is asking for disease pressure. I respect his opinion. The giants of the hobby have been grown in a range of 2% to 30% so this makes for a great topic.

If you have well-drained soil you can get away with higher levels of organic matter than if you have clay soil which does not drain well. I’m not an agronomist, but I have grown in both sandy & clay soil with high organic matter in both. Fusarium ran me out of my clay soil patch, but it has not been a problem in my time growing in sandy soil.
