Yah it sucks. One way to tell early if you have it is to stick a cut stem in water and if you see clearish white goo come out it's infected.

Many possible host trees around my place. This probably explains some of my trouble with growing potatoes, dahlias, etc. Its in the pumpkin vines too, I think. The only safe mulch to use would be purely conifer based. (Read below. Other things work, too.) There must be a nutritional solution but I havent found it yet. Update: a found a source that points out many good ways to reduce spores most of which should already be familiar to pumpkin and tomato growers (all the amendment/ soil enhancement/ cover crop stuff that we already know works). Except this one you havent heard of... broccoli stalks are good. Eat your broccoli, soil...
A cover crop of kale... is now officially a good idea.
