If the sun is blocked from any angle, you know what to do.
My two biggest fruits this year (don't ask) were where I planted anew, in as much sun as possible. PS---Just an observation: Might it be more fun to dig the rocks outward away from the patch rather than inward-first? Perhaps there is not enough support. Good Luck! eg

I don't think I can edit, so no offense to methods already used and I never knew it was called a 'thumb' - the extra gripper FOR picking rocks and such. Too bad it might not have the 'launch' feature, lol. Pretty cool item to have. eg

That’s funny! Each year I cut a few more trees down. If I do more than that it catches my wife’s attention, which is never a good thing. And, yep, rocks on the outside, with a fading ambition for a stone wall build in the distant future.
