I have some pumpkins started in the house. One of them is about 6 inches tall, and I would like to transfer it outside. It seem kind of fragile as tall and slender as it is. how much of that 6 inches can I bury when I transplant it? thanks

Someone else with more experience will chip in but I imagine you can bury it pretty far up and later on it will send out new roots along that stem. Wait for a more conclusive answer!

I do not know enough about your climate and bugs but here in our cold climate I would suggest not burying the stem. Seed corn maggots are quite common in our cool soil. If the stem is buried to the cots and a maggot chews in to it the seedling is dead. Once in a blue moon I can see a seedling that has characteristics like wilting that is different than the one seedling next to it. I can sometimes save it as the seed corn maggot has just chewed through a few roots because the stem is above the soil level. If you choose to not bury to the cots I would also highly suggest that you use bamboo stakes to support the seedling. No matter what you do, always have back ups ready to go and enjoy the whole act of gardening.
