Farming- a bunch of catastrophies that result in a lifestyle

I've looked up so much info on cover crop types and what they do I'm dreaming about it. Anyway, here is some places/prices I've found: I'm likely just going to order it from Hollands, they have a mix of vetch, rye, and wheat that sounds perfectly suited for the patch, for 28 bucks with shipping, enough to cover my little 1,000 sq feet. Mustard: (yellow)- 4.43 lb, Hearne Seeds (yellow)- 3lbs, 16.32, Green cover seed.com (Kodiak)- 2.5 lbs, 16.85, territorial seeds winter rye: Mountain Valley Seed (I use these guys for my greenhouse seed, very clean seed, excellent germ) 5lbs-3.50 Green Cover seed- 5lbs, 6.80 Territorial seeds- 5lbs,21.60 Southern States- 3lbs, 5.99 Winter Wheat- Green cover seed- 5lbs,2.00 Territorial Seed- 5lbs, 17.85 Hairy Vetch- Green Cover seed- 3lbs, 9.95 Territorial seed- 1 lb, 9.05

I can get winter rye for 50lbs for 8 dollars...check your look feed mills and agricultural co-ops...for most of the seeds you are looking for. Rmember shipping normally cost more than the seeds if you are buying online.

Mr. Van Pelt, is that a grainery near you? I have one in my area, but wasn't sure if seeds would be viable as they dry everything the farmers bring in? Would they still grow even though they have gone through the dryer? I can get everything from the grainery but the vetch if the seeds will still be useable.

Grain stores/co-ops work GREAT. If in doubt, ask for a few seeds to test for germination.
Sometimes they will even special order for you.

Dumb ass that i can sometimes be out thinking myself....i asked my dad today if the wheat and corn were still good after we put it through the dryer....(i grew up on a dairy and cash crop farm) i swear, i heard the sound of crickets before he said " have you somehow forgotten the massive piles you and your brother played in before spring planting" Lol. I played the " didnt know if different dryers did different things card", dad didnt buy that for one minute.

I like oats. There cheap and out west they did some study's and found that oats make a great cover crop. I go to my local feed store and buy 100 pounds of oats they use for making feed with.

I get my cover crop and deer food plot seeds from Welter Seed and Honey (welterseed.com). I like dwarf Essex rape every other year. It is cheap, grows fast, suppresses weeds and disease (in the mustard family) and you just throw it on the ground to plant. It is just a 20 minute drive for me, but they ship all over and pay half of shipping cost on some larger orders. They have a good online catalog, but you have to call in the order. Would be a good place for a club to place a group order.
