What causes pumpkins and pumpkin plants to slow down and eventually stop growing, even under the ideal conditions of a greenhouse?

Theyre a fruit.they have a programed growth cycle.they ripen kinda like a apple or tomato.

I worded that question badly, lets try this instead: Why do pumpkins only have a 120 day max growing period and what prevents them from growing any longer?
If their growth is programmed to 120 days, could you ever change this programming to allow them to grow for extended lengths of time?

Weve been doing that in effect by selection. When I started growing in 97 the pumpkins grew at least 10 days shorter than today. How we can do that hormonally or with some chemical agent please chime in.

It would involve suppressing ethylene gas formation which causes the fruit to ripen

I think it might be genectics that make them grow longer. Some & note the word Some of the heaviest kins ever grown got that way because they grew a few days longer then the average kin. Then everyone grows the seeds & continus to improve there lifespan. In time the average life span is getting longer.Just an idea Not sure its fact though.
