Well this is a real heart breaker. We woke this morning & found that our 1789 Wallace has split. It was estimating @ 1000# & growing @ 30+ pounds per day. It was tough losing this one as it had real potential to hit go over 1800#. Oh well, I should have known it was too good to be true. We're now down to 2 pumpkins that are @ 500# + each. It's amazing but we seem to have lost our best growing pumpkins to splits for the past 4 years. Oh well maybe we'll get that big one to hold together for us next year.

Good luck all.

Sorry to hear, I cant imagine.

Ill be interested to hear how thick/thin the walls are on your 1789. This seed seems to either produce real thick or real thin.

That sucks, at least you can see potential. I can't even find that anymore.

Sorry to hear that Jane and Phil...always tough to lose a pumpkin, no matter the size.

Richmond Dave has a 1789 Wallace growing in his patch that is showing all the signs of being pretty special, and we hope to get it all the way to weighoff.

Phil, I would be interested in the shape and wall thickness. My 1789 is not very tall but big around the bottom. I am hoping that is a sign of heavy thick walls. Blossom rolled under back side about day 20 or so. The pumpkin looks like the 1789 Wallace shape wise, but more orange coming through.

The pumpkin really wants to take off, but the cool weather is stunting the acceleration curve. Daily gains are still going up, but very slowly. Slow and steady I guess.

So sorry to heat about your 1789 pumpkin going down. With all the work that goes into growing these giants you hate to see yourself or anyone for that matter lose a pumpkin. It really is tough when you know you have a special one going. Have a great summer anyway Jane & Phil.

Thanks all. We really appreciate your support. It was a real heart-breaker that's for sure.

We got 3" of rain in 1/2 hour. We noticed the split once the storm was over. I started cutting it up for the seeds for the club & found that it had a nice thick walls @ 9"+ all around the sides. The shoulders were easily over 12" thick. It was a big bulky looking pumpkin with big ribs. I expect it would have went heavy.
I really think it was the 3" of rain that we got last week that done it in. It had a soft spot on the left side rib on the bottom that I didn't notice until after the storm. It was still doing over 30 per day. Anyways that pumpkin growing for you.
We wish you all the best with your big ones & hope you get them to the scales. Good luck.

especially tough to hear because its not easy for phil to get around in the patch.jane and phil ---- your time will come again.

we have heard a lot of good things again this year regarding the 1789 and im sure it will make an appearence or two in next years wallace patch.

between the 1789-2009-1725 it could be an all wally/harp backfield.

The 1789 certainly has the stuff to grow a new WR. If we get a chance, we'll certainly plant it again. Thanks for the seed Ron & Pap.

Good luck all,
