Hey I had my stump on my 1554 start leaking so I cut about 60 degrees out to get good airflow and put a slope on the bottom so it drains nice. It is still draining 1-2 drops per second still after 5 days and can't seem to find a way to get it to stop. I was wondering if any one had any tricks to get them to stop. I've tried a fan, captan, the saltiest stuff in my garden shed (calcium chloride), cauterizing with a cattle dehorner, and a hair blow dryer. No signs of slowing down. Maybe it's better to cut the whole stump off? Joe

Don't cut it off. On a normal year with HEAT they are hard to handle and keep from rotting so you want to slit, treat and do the best you can to keep it dry. It's also VERY important to make sure the first couple segments of main didn't get foam up them as well. If so it will continue down to the fruit and game over. I missed that on mine last year and had to remove the pumkpin a month before Stillwater.

So bottom line is they don't just stop. All you can do is limp them along. But do NOT get behind the rot and do NOT miss out on the liquid traveling down the main. It's best to open (slightly) the first segment of main to see if it also contains liquid. 60 degrees is more than I take.

Somehow...some way I have a leaker here as well. It popped on a 60 degree (for a high) day...lol. With this weather rot is simply not a big concern of mine.

Is you look in my Diary, I take an even more aggressive approach. I pick a spot ahead of the stump and drill through the entire Vine so any fluid that heads up the vine drains out. I treat this area with Cleary's and sulphur and I have yet to lose a vine from a stump issue. I realize this is not the ideal scenario but a little sacrafice now helps in the end. The leaker on my 1756 is still leaking but there is Nothing getting into the vine and growth has been steady. As Chris said, if you have to chase it down the vine, then you end up filleting into your secondaries also. Put a drain in and you are done with that issue.

thanks for the tips I didn't even think about it going down the main. I just went home and cut a little hole in the low spot of the next two segments and no fluid so I must have got it in time.

Noted foaming stump 2 weeks ago on one plant and immediately started cutting down the main at secondaries until healthy stem matter seen. Radical but it seems to have saved the rest of the plant...time will tell. Only lost stump and 3 secondaries. Good luck Joe!
