Does anyone use sand under the pumpkin ?? I usually use wood and styrofoam but think the sand idea may be a better approach ...

I like sand. Allows the pumpkin to easily slide while it grows and helps keep the bottom of the pumpkin flat. Also drains better when it gets wet.

Sand is my personal top choice. I've gone to using only sand just a few years ago. Since the change, my percentage of pumpkins aborting has gone way down. The pumpkins seem to natually form a very well balanced groove into the sand. The sand seems to allow the pumpkins to be balanced with a more even distribution for their weight. I purchase all purpose sand.

I used sand for the first time for me, and it seemed to work really well.

I used play sand the last two years but switched to mill fabric this year. I like the mill fabric better. I wound up with concave pumpkins my last two years on sand, and though I don't know if the sand was a factor (vs. genetics or something else), I figured it couldn't hurt to switch to mill fabric.
