I have a pumpkin set with a deformed lobe and its shape looks perfectly fine.

My tallest and roundest of 3 was deformed this year. Longer pumpkins tend to weigh more, but for me personally, I don't like to grow them and would rather have a tall light pumpkin.

I have seen female lobes deformed but what about male lobes? Does that carry through at all?

The deformed lobes can be indicator of injury or sickness or genetic deficiency with your plant. A deformed lobe is very often sterile which can result in either no seeds or sterile seeds. This is why complete pollination of all fully formed lobes is essential to getting genetics passed on. A deformed lobe that is sterile can result in that section of the fruit growing stunted or malformed. Even if you get fertile seeds they can potentially pass on a genetic deficiency.
