I prefer to let the secondary get past its first leaf node before I bury the main at that junction. I usually just stake it until I am able to bury it. Male flowers have no problem poppping through, they pop up everywhere.

I have waited and also buried immediatly. The secondaries and flowers don't seem to have a problem coming through the soil. I don't bury the vine where I see a female flower.

bunton.....Hamilton here........I have been burying last 3 years..I too am careful around were i see a female.have had much better success since getting good taproots.be careful if you have a pumpkin set near a taproot you may have to cut it later so you dont put stress on the stem....Cheers!!!!!!
