I've read to keep button on long as possible.but my punkins keep rotting after 5 days of great growth.i have been removing pedals off.yet the button will keep flip flopping back & forth from dry to soggy depending on weather.since the button is the direct line into kin.it takes in pollen to get it growing.could it be taking in bad stuff. Cause with our humidity the button want stay dried out.

A lot of folks will cut them off if they are soft. Rot can, and will spread into the fruit. I have done it a few times, and the pumpkin grew fine. Apply a fungicide after you cut it off, like captan.

Yardman, I had same problem here in NE NC last year, I started 'painting' the button with daconil when I removed the petals the day after pollination, haven't had an issue with it rotting again.
