I have had this argument at a bar over beer. Grocery stores only recently here started calling them by their proper name. Not sure how it all started but rutabagas are common all year long in my area in Canada since they store well all winter,but turnips....well I've never seen them at the market so maybe thats why none knows any difference exists.

Turnips are self incompatible rutabagas are not. Turnips have a scratchy prickly leaf rutabagas are smooth. And get this rutabagas are twice as large in weight. So it is important to get it right. Not to long ago a club sponsored weigh off in Canada was excepting rutabagas as turnips and Zucca gourds as zucchini. Both were not properly classed and had the potential to screw up the records. Please get it right. Thanks Scott.

I guess you know it but;
A rutabaga is a cross between a turnip and a cabbage and I believe it carries both sets of genes.
In my family growing up it was clear, turnips were "Irish apples" and rutabagas were "rooty buggers"
for whatever that's worth.

Spud, what does this have to do with the GOP and why is it their fault?

Dick Cheney was actually responsible for the secret program that spliced cabbage genes onto turnips. The result being that while turnips remain ambrosia, rutabagas not so much.

I would have thought it was George Bush's fault.
