Last year my first flying egg planter showed up around the second week of July. If the larvae burrrrows into the ground over winter, why would I not see any when I am tilling the ground. How deep are these guys? is there any thing that will kill them before they fly?

I am always wondering where all the insects come from too. Supposedly most garden pests overwinter in leaf litter and organic debris to try and stay out of the wind and cold.

Ohhh you might have seen them, if you looked really close. I have seen them after tilling. They are a brown pupa. I will post a picture of one in my diary. They have a fairly large range they fly also.

Another thing to note they hatch on a known cycle of 900 growing degree day 50 cycle. Some god gardening sites record this. What it is every day you record the temperature above 50. So today it is 84. That would be 34 growing degree day.

I calculated that wrong you take the high and low temp subtract them and divide by 2. If you are from Wisconsin or Minnesota here is a nice calculator

I see them in the fall all the time when i'm clearing the patch out with my weed torch. They come squirming out because of the heat.
