I've been thumbing through seed catalogs looking for fertilizers and cover crops and I've been amazed at the prices. I stopped by my local feed store and found common rye for 14.60 per 50 lb bag and fishmeal for 21.40 per 50lbs. alfalfa meal and many seed meals make excellent fertilizer, too.

I couldn't agree more. Everyone should take a trip to their local co-op and check out the prices. Not to mention supporting your local community.

I'll 3rd that. Stopped by the local feed store and very impressed with the many new products they are offering. They are now carrying products that I had to travel for or order online, awesome.

Took me some time to locate, but found 1 with everything 25min away. So cheap i could probably resale some of what i purchased and make money.

Another untapped resource many don't use is a local hydroponics shop if available. I think it was North Shore who told me to look for one a while back, and now I'm in their all the time.

Absolutely right Luke. A new hydroponics store opened in New Minas, about ten minutes away. They even sell the air pumps for making compost tea. This season everything I need is within a 20 min drive.

Pretty sure i know where every hydroponic store in NovaScotia is located. Some of the most intelligent growers out there..you will meet in a hydro store and believe me when i tell you that their products are second to none as well as the info they like to share!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep. Great wealth of knowledge and products at the hydro store. Lucky I got one 10 minutes away. The owner is now growing giant pumpkins too and carries rti products as well. Midwest Hydroganics in Crest Hill Illinois. Ask for Joe....proud to call him a friend.

That's funny shazzy,,,,,,,, I have the boys at our local store getting ready to grow this summer ;)
Always handing out free samples of growth products too. I try them on my regular veggies. They gave me this stuff called "Sea Green" a couple weeks ago,,,,, been trying it on our artichokes,,,,,,,,, holy cow does this stuff work! The day after I fed them,,, the leaves were standing up like never before! I've tried many things from them and never really notice much change. Not with this!!!!
Them guys are on the cutting edge! Well,,,,,,,,,, at least for the green stuff:)

Yeah, hydroponic shops. I have to go off my island to buy the "specialty" products from a hydro shop. The local feed and grain has all the normal stuff. I have gotten to know one of the big time "growers" (wink wink) on the mainland. This year he is really excited about getting a pumpkin plant from me. Kind of fun. And yes, some of these people are very knowledgeable about plant growth.
