It probably depends on the cable. Check to see if there are instructions with it. I put mine about 8 inches deep and laid it in a spiral pattern about 6" between coils. Mine has the built in thermostat and it Seemed to work well it kept the soil about 72 degrees with no problem.

Last year I buried mine 10" deep in a cris-cross pattern, agree with Capt about 6" between cables. Doing this it took a little over a week to get soil temps from 59 degrees up to 72 degrees. Totally worth it!

I have the heavy duty cables from Tom P. I put them at about 10 inches deep. Watch the distance between as too close caused hot spots >110 degrees. Had to dig up and space wider at about 8-10inches.

thanks guys....bought this one 24 foot heat cable at the local hydroponic shop in town and was told it is pretty heavy duty. Gonna try it out for one plant plot this year and compare it to the others i have and see how the growth compares early on. if the growth is very noticable then next year i'll drop the coin on a big setup for all the plants. You guys have luck with heat cables???
