Is it possible to use diluted round up for weed control among onions? I have heard this but I don't want to kill off the young onions. If you have done this what ratio do you use? Thanks for any advice.

I wouldn't....For onions we always plant in 4 squares with enough room for the hula hoe between them

Not onions, but I had a trace of roundup residual in a sprayer wipe out a 8 foot AG plant last year gradually over 10 days. I believe it is systemic so I wouldn't either.

What kind of weeds are you trying to kill grasses or broadleafs

Poast or sethoxydim are good for grasses...there are some post emergents for broad leafs but you are going to have a hard time in CA getting them

I think Poast would kill your onions.

I heard of some using a sponge. may be a roller? but unless you got miles to do. grab a ho. no matter how you mix it, get it on the leaf and you'll kill it.

Thanks everyone for saving my onions from me. Glad I asked. I'll looked up the suggestions but I am thinking I need to start picking some weeds. Thanks again.

I meant to say "I'll look". Galigan looks like a great product, it even kills burning nettle (which we call stinging nettle). I found it on ebay for $310 for 2.5 gallons and it does say it is legal in CA. I am trying to see if any of my farming buddies have it. Thanks for the help.

After checking with my friend he suggested trying Goal 2XL. Diluted 1 oz per gal it has so far killed off the weeds (including the nettle) and the onions look fine. He said that goal and galigan are similar. Thanks for everyone's replies.
