I bury the 40' heavy duty cables approx. 6 - 8" I start with a 2' circle and make more concentric circles, each 6" larger than the one before. I install the cables several days before the plant is set out inside the original 2' circle. It helps to unroll the cable from the pkg. and then roll it up backwards. That way you end up with the electical receptacle at the right end. The heating portion of the cable should not touch or cross directly over another heating portion. If you need more help, our new DVD shows the step by step installation of a 40' heavy duty cable. You can check it out at www.hollandsgiants.com
Thanks, Joel

Do you attach it to a piece of hardware cloth? Thats what my instructions show me to do and I have been wondering if it helps distribute the heat or just helps in creating a uniform heat pattern.

I have never used the hardware cloth. I know the directions from the manufacturer suggest that. I thought it might be appropriate for supporting the cable at the bottom of a growing bed, but it doesn't seem necessary for the application we use them for.
