Apparently there is a new kid in town known as the Carolina Reaper. This pepper is now being called the "King of Hot," hotter than the hottest. Trinadad Scorpion aka The Ghost takes a second place. Anyone have any experience with or growing any of these now or in the future? What was your experience with these hotties? I know Iceman is into "hotties." Iceman sent me some seeds last year which did not do well for me and was later, on the way back from Vegas, overheard mumbling something about Las Vegas hotties. Are these a new kind of pepper as well? Iceman, do you have seeds from any of these?

Marv the trinidad scorpian isn't the Ghost. The Trinidad scorpian has been tested for a average 1,500,000 scovilles. The Ghost ( bhut jolokia) comes in on average 1,000,000 scovilles. I know the pepper your talking about has been said to come in at 1,500,000 scovilles but I don't think there has been testing done on it yet like the previous 2 . You could probably grow the Carolina or Trinidad to near 2,000,000 with proper water manipulation but to determine the actual scoville unit it is tested in a wide variety of methods to get the average.

How long did you give the ones you tried last year to sprout? It can take as long as 3 weeks for the Bhut Jolokia to germinate.

I messed up and let my 3 year old help me put my pepper seeds in the germinator a couple weeks ago. A few minutes after we were done, he came running back to me saying his tongue hurt. It took a minute, but then realized he was eating crackers, and licked his fingers. I had seeds last year (hot cherry) that I had given up on at 35 days, sprout after I quit watching.

The seeds I got last year and killed were from Iceman and I believe he said that they came from a cross between Butch T Trinidad Scorpion and a 7 Pot pepper. These are all very hot. I guess when you get to a certain point it no longer matters. Habenaro peppers are around 850,000 Scoville units and that was to me always a really hot pepper. These others can be as high as 1.5 million units depending on growing techniques and Carolina Reaper may or may not be even hotter. All of these peppers apparently burn both coming and going.

I've only heard of a couple habenero peppers that even topped 300,000

I damn near killed a guy at work once with habeneros. I grew two plants on opposite ends of the garden and did the watering technique of each differently. Basically one plant produced peppers that were as hot as a jalapeno & the other produced the hottest habeneros I had ever grown. Well when I took some to work I pulled the stems off the cooler habs & left the stems on the inferno habs. I was eating the cool ones basically like candy & a couple of guys told me that if I could do it then they could as well. I reached in the bag and pulled out 3 habs for each of them with the stems on and told them to down all 3 in a minute.
They did....WOW!!! it was funny as hell....LOL
p.s. I never told them the truth

Dumb question, but what do people do with these hot peppers if you can't eat them?

I dry them to grind. I make homemade bug pepper spray & a couple of times a year I'll eat one for the rush it gives you

Thanks. I'm a wuss when it comes to hot food, but that bug spray would probably be nice when camping or put some outside the tent to keep critters away. Maybe sprinkle some around the compost pile to keep the dogs from digging.

OR you can use the spray on the bathroom door handle of a guy who really ticked you off

I ordered some reapers from Joe. http://www.pepperjoe.com/
Grew the Trinidad Scorpion last year.. Hottest I ever grew.
Cant wait to try the reaper. The Mexican guys that work for me make a pepper mash. They make the best homemade HOT tamales!
