My compost bin is ready to be emptied from leaves and kitchen waste from all last year to make room for this years leaves. Winter Rye is already 8 inches long so would you compost gurus recommend to spread it evenly over the rye, just add to next years main planting holes, or move to side and till in next spring?

Thanks in advance.

Luke, Im no compost guru, if it looks like black gold, its ready to use. If it still looks like leaves and kitchen stuff, pile it till next spring.

Cover it and save it till spring...why let winter leach all those goodies away

Thanks guys. It looks like a few hundred pounds of coffee grounds and filled with worms, so definitely ready to go. I will probably just move it and cover until spring as suggested.

Luke I dump coffee grounds around the entire patch. if you ask places to save them for you and provide them with buckets they'll do it for you if not they gotta throw them away..

Dude Starbucks will jump for joy for helping them lift those heavy bags out of the store. If they give you a weird look or say they don't do that then talk to the manager he should know.

Thanks again. I have heard that about Starbucks, just never acted on it. The actual compost product I have is probably 5% coffee grounds and the rest is leaves, vegetables, fruit, shredded newspaper, and all sorts of table scraps. My friend also works for a liquor distributor and I have him bring me expired beer... really gets things going. I think that is why there are so many worms.

Beer never seems to expire around our area.

Beer never gets old enough to expire after it goes in my fridge either Ned...

What kinda hippy eco beer are you talking about Luke?

lol. I guess it's stuff he couldn't get rid of before expiring, and it's usually those $1 dollar malt liquor cans. I like my cheap beer, but this stuff is cat piss and old too. Works great on the compost... have at it boys!
