As I am planning for 2013 I am wondering if a square foot is a square foot? Would a plant that is 40 feet wide and 20 feet long have the same effect of a 28 x 28 foot plant? They are both roughly 800 square feet but one would be a bit slower to fill in due to the secondary width. Will the secondaries farther out feed as effectively as ones closer? Thoughts?

along those lines, would be curious to hear what everyones preferred side vine length is, or if we have data for this for the biggest pumpkins this year. some would also argue that one person's 800 sq foot plant is not equivalent to a different growers 800 sq foot plant, given that one person may be cramming a lot more plant and vines into their 800 sq feet.

I think this is one of these things that would be considered a grey area. Cash croppers have expermented endlessly with crop density (plant population per acre. They have tried 30 inch rows 20 inch rows 14 inch rows You name it. What gets the best yield?? The answer is, it depends on heat units, amount of rain, diseases, fertilizer rates, soil type ect. So every year is differant. What works one year might be the worst thing to do the following year. Do I sound like a pessemist?????? Does anyone really know what the "ideal" square footage to get the biggest kin is??? I don't think there is anything carved in stone. So to answer your question>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I HAVE NO CLUE!!!

John, From my perspective, seems like you want the most growth established before the pumpkin is set and behind hte pumpkin. So we make ours wider than long.
pineridge......look at the top 20 on aggc.org (not sure how we will get the info thtis year) and see how big of an area each one of them used. Then go with your gut.
