I know....a ton of hard work and staying on top of things. What I have noticed from the champs is that they never give up even after setbacks. Total deduction in every phase of growing. I can see why the champs are always in the winners circle. It just shows how much work I'll need. To do for next season.

The Wallaces are NOTORIOUS for sharing their knowledge. Look for them to make the seminar rounds this winter and put forth a GREAT presentation.

Is backyard giants a "How to book" or is it just a book on giant pumpkins. Next year I would like a step by step system to follow from a great grower who has a shot at being in the top 5 every year. I'm shooting for 1500lbs and I'm going to need some help getting there

The main theme you're going to hear is proper balancing of your soil. That prep starts now in October for next years growing season. First step is to get a soil test done to see what you have.

Soil, Brosco is the most important part of growing. It takes time to get where the Wallace's are, I think they have been growing over 20 years. Good luck.

Seeds, you got to have the good proven genetics, soil, a grower of the year said it is the most important, sun, the weather can be a big factor, hail storm and it could be all over! and luck. The Wallaces are also extremely generous with there seeds, alot of growers send them bubble envelopes. They share seeds!

They share!! Go to the "New Growers Forum" in the message board. Go to the posting that start 12/26/11 by pap. Read and re-read. Take notes.

Brosco you'll need a green house to get that big up there in my opinion! Join a club in Michigan there are some good growers that can mentor you!

A greenhouse? He's further south than the 1818 and 1810 WR's. In fact being down wind of lake MI should be a great temp buffer and will probably give him about as good of climate as anyone? Warmish nights and not too hot during the day. Sounds like a perfect spot to me.

Thanks brotherdave those where some great tips from pap. Hey Chris do you have any good tips or recommendations of a book. I know what my soil needs and I'm working on that right now, but I still need to find some good genetics but rather than bugging the Wallace's ill just buy some from the auctions that I have been researching. I can't wait to start my sophomore year, I plan on being a sponge on here for knowledge.

Brosco. Soil is your best friend. Take a test and speak with an AGRONOMIST regarding the results. Cultural practices are probably next important or most important. You can have the best soil in the world and if you don't know what you are doing it won't go very well. There have been some monster pumpkins grown on iffy soil.

Seeds are just that...seeds. ANY seed with decent genetics (hundreds if not thousands of different seeds qualify) can go 1500++. It doesn't have to say Wallace, Stelts, Harp, Werner,,,,etc....to grow a WR.

There are some simply amazing seeds out there that nobody will grow or very few. Lots of 1725, 1810, 1495...etc...seeds that will see very very limited planting.

Chris,
a greenhouse is my opinion, I've seen some biggins come out of them. Just look at Carl Graham's diary, Mark Clementz diary! Thought it may help in cool spring and fall He can do what he wants I guess I'll keep my opinion's to myself. Good day!

Josh I'm sorry if my post seemed pointed. The purpose was rather to re-assure that a greenhouse certainly isn't needed. Greenhouses are a lot of work and a lot of money. Neither of which is a great option for most new growers.

Apparently I'm a lousy poster on this site. I've had a few people take my posts the wrong way lately. Anyone that knows me knows I'm not like that.

Forums are very hard to post intentions on and although your post seemed like you where trying to be a know it all I'm sure you didn't intend it to be interpreted as that. Some times good people seem like pricks on forums to put it simple.

Not offended, just seems if I post a comment there's always someone saying it's not necessary(like talking to the wife)! I will be using a green house this year that will cost $200 to construct. I want a more controlled environment. A green house might not be necessary but it helps in my situation!
