Would I get a bigger pumpkin if I grow it in a greenhouse? no bugs; you can control the temperature;no direct sun.... would a greenhouse seed grow the same if grown outside with no protection around it?

The 2009 Wallace wasn't grown in a green house, besides you have such great weather in Cali. Keep it shaded, watered, sprayed, weeded and fertilized.

greenhouse is a big advantage in cooler than ideal climates.examples in alaska, europe, canada and pacific northwest .Further south will be a advantage-would require a professional set up to keep temps down during mid summer

Personally I believe a plant needs a bit of adverse conditions to grow through to make it a stronger plant. An example is when we put a fan on a young seedling to strengthen it up a bit. I guess we all have our. Theories.

This year ill be using larger greenhouses because of the damp season in the beginning of the season.I'm currently working on my drainage issues.well see how the larger greenhouses work this year.

I grow in a greenhouse and my goal in wash. is to simulate a more optimum growing inviroment. Ok for example the midwest and east coasteners have very warm summer days and the over night temps dont drop very much and there is the humidity factor as well. The humidity is higher in those areas. In the western side of the contenant we have the really warm days but our over night temps drop some 30-40 degrees. I.E. 95 daytime temp and a 55-60 degree night and a much lower percentage of humidity. So what I try to do in my greenhouse is to get as close as possible to copying the mid and eastern coast climates. It isnt an easy transition nor a cheap one either.

At the end of the day the more control you have over your plants the better they will perform. Although we have not had a brilliant last couple of years I believe we are well on the way to finding the right “blue print” for growing inside. It was a shame we lost so many this year due to heat at pollination but now we know the problem that can be controlled. So at the end of the day the key is Control. Oh yeah The "Thadinator" He's good, real good but tell him I said that.

A removable greenhouse roof sounds ideal, like sports arenas, weather gets to bad, push a button and on comes the roof!

i have seen Beni meiers patch he has a greenhouse big enough for 3 Plants and he got 2 real large Pumpkins and the 3. ( he called the little ) was over 1000 Lbs too ... I think here in switzerland its only possible to grow in this size with greenhouse .

I grow in a screenhouse mostly to keep the bugs off my plants.I can also shade plants to keep it cooler inside then out.Wind protection is awesome.rain still gets through.I only use plastic to keep heavy rains off,& to contain heat in the fall.I'm really looking forward to growing the heavy genetics under the screen in 2013.It also keeps leaves healthy to seasons end.Screen cost a lot more then plastic but last for 7 years minimum. So it's actually cheaper to use.Outside I cant get a pumpkin to the scales anymore.Kin cave is the only way for me to go.

Ive often wondered if too much humidity would be a problem in a greenhouse. Your putting a lot of water in there every day and it has to go somewhere. Do you guys use ventilation in these green houses??

I am in northern ontario and was stuck with a pb around the 600# area for about 3 yrs. I built greenhouses for two plants this spring and got my pb up to 1347# and the other was 1113#. I feel that the greenhouses had a big part in this. As for ventilation, i put roll up sides and extra wide doors on the ends. The roll up sides go up 4ft so there is lots of open area for air flow. I am considering a third one. The other great thing is that you have somewhere to go work on a rainy day without getting wet.

Whiz ;;you doubled your weight with a greenhouse; You not only doubled your weight you have reached that 1347lb weight in just a couple of years; a greenhouse is the way to grow

a greenhouse in Northern Ontario, or Alaska, or Northern MN is definately the way to go. They can have frost in July. a greenhouse in sunny California or Arizona, or anywhere in the southeast US may be a detriment. Those areas will struggle to keep the greenhouse temperature under 90 degrees during the growing season. They would do better with a shade house. You have to find the right tool to fix your particular climate challenges.

A greenhouse would be perfect here in the central valley.Just need to add a few swamp coolers. We are just to hot most of the summer during the day then cool off to much at night. August ave. temp here this year was 96 with many days way over 100. It's not unusual to be 100 plus in the day then be in the low 50's at night.I think this would be a great way to keep the plants cooler during the day then the plastic would help keep the greenhouse hotter at night. Thus more closely duplicating the northeast weather. I will probably be growing in one the year after I win the lotto, cause it's going to cost a fortune for electricty. Ron Root
