Steve, that first link is from our Vancouver local paper and yes, coyotes have crossed the Rocky mountains and are now a major pest...even in the downtown core of Vancouver.
Cougars and bears...usually never an issue (unless the bears turn into garbage bears and the cougars start eating fluffy and spot...beloved pets).
We have all sorts of predators here, but they usually keep to themselves...

We occasionally have mountain lions here in the hilly part of northeast Iowa. Although they have scared the heck out of my daughter a couple times an left tracks in the snow riht by our house,they do a good job of eliminating groundhogs from the pumpkin patch.
