I'm trying used cat litter around the pumpkin (sifted). After placing my sheet/blanket over it I can't imagine any chewing pests wanting to enter this "tent" of peeyou! I hope it works :)

I tried "ring of death" last year--raccoons defeated the whole purpose of the traps, and mice got the bait the raccoons didn't--glue traps were just as useless.
Keep us updated on the used cat litter.

4-5 traps around each fruit. Loaded with peanut butter. I have caught 31 so far. :-)

So.Cal.Grower - I have a way to get raccoons but I don't think it's legal. It is a gauranteed solution but I don't want the raccoon rangers knocking at my door. One of the ingredients is coke, the other ingredient you will have to figure out!!!! I have got so many with this I have lost count, plus it is great for skunks and possums!!!!

Golden Malrin--cocaine for raccoons. Also illegal to use to kill raccoons(or other varmints). :-)

Cornhusk I was thinking the same thing earlier this year when a cat peed on the sheet I was using to cover my pumpkin - smell gross but I thought "great it'll" keep the mice away . . . . then I read this about mice infected with Toxoplasmosis (most mice and many raccoons are):
The Toxoplasmosis parasite has been found to have the ability to change the behaviour of its host: infected rats and mice are less fearful of cats—in fact, some of the infected rats seek out areas marked with cat urine. This effect is advantageous to the parasite, which is able to proliferate if a cat eats the infected rat and thereby becomes a carrier.
