This is what I found around the pumpkin when I removed the thicker sand. It looks like the sand roughed it up as it grew forward. Or is the bottom rotting? They are all dry and no softness anywhere that I can detect. Thanks! -Jim

Looks like wear or friction marks from the sand to me,,or its a contact type thing were the sand is making the pumpkin do that

hi orange
i dont want to be the bearer of bad news but that area you posted a picture of looks exactly like the bottom edges of a large pumpkin i had in 2005.mine was some sort of disease and eventually the fruit just rotted.the area felt like small moon craters.
if it were me? id get a small hand trowel, dig out around under neath of that area and inspect it.check all the way around where the fruit meets the sand.
depending on what you find? you could apply some powdered fungicide after spraying with bleach and water.also for next season? id strongly suggest using mill fabric. sand holds to much moisture and can promote fungal diseases.
good luck pap

Thanks all I've cleared out around it and seems dry and firm for now. Tomorrow I will clean and apply fungicide to the spot. Currently I use mill fabric with sand on top maybe I will nix the sand next year? Or use a thin layer. I used a lot more than in previous years.
I'd do more today but I'm off to a ball game. Important stuff first!
