Okay here goes, I have seen plenty of growers planting proven seeds. Does anybody out there think a heavy hitter will ever go off the normal practice of growing proven seeds to see what a particular seed can do. Seeds like the 1789 seem to be a safe bet considering the genetics and result of the family tree a well as the growers that have been planting it. I'm in that catagory to. I HAVE THE FREAK planted. Are there any grower that have grown a world class pumpkin from an unknown seed that nobody intended to grow in the first place. I understand that there are seeds that have the genetics to give monsters that probably won't get planted by a real seriouse grower for good reason lmao!!. My seeds have always been in this catagory...lol....i'd be really interested in seeing if an unknown seed has yeilded a world class pumpkin. With so many options and so many good genetic to choose from seed selection seem to get harder. I myself have chosen to grow club seeds due to their availability and reputation of the growers. It seems so much easier to obtain the seeds and advice from the individual grower when you choose to give their seed a place in your garden....please understand thi I just a simple quetion not intended to offend any growers at all. The genetics out there seem to be available for all and the gene pool is so great that its anyones game. Happy growing!

Kenny,

That was pretty much all we had back in the day! I guess it was more challenging back then when 5-600 lbs was huge. But then we were working on culture, maybe a little more than pure genetics and that end of it had more potential right out of the blocks! My "freak" is 8-900 lbs now. Just hope I've learned enough and gotten enough good advice to keep it growing and healthy for the next 6 weeks!

Good luck!

Kenny, the 1404 Bryson is a great example of someone growing a seed with awesome genetics (and his own seed) and growing the new World Record. Only 3 other AGGC reported fruit grown from the 1404 in 2011 and look at it now.

Rightly so, this seed is hot and planted by many. Will it get more proven? Sure it will...its being grown!!

There is a local heavy hitter that grows new seeds every year...seems like it does not matter what he plants...he proves it cause he is a great grower.

I send out maybe 1 bubble per year after asking permission to do so when requesting seeds...but I always grow them!!

This year, pap can I send you a bubble...lol...

1/2 the gains I bet are from the experience and skill of the grower, so to be fair to a unproven seed would'nt it have to be grown by a heavy hitter? to get the proven seed label?

It wasn't that long ago when Quinn planted the 1161 Rodonis. I'm pretty sure nobody was looking at that seed when he first put it the ground. Not hard to see how well that seed has done. It kind of started a new trend where growers started looking at the father rather than just the pumpkin that a seed came from.

Kenny my 1140 was 1073 Carlson / Petersen x 998 Pukos. 1073 was a BES pumpkin and 998 went down to disease. Of course nobody wanted to plant it.

Therefore I planted it and grew my 1543, Hopkins planted it and grew 1325, then I grew a 1561 and there were several more over 1000. So that's an example.

Here's a guarantee. Give Quinn or Dave (your aggc top 2) ANY late model seed and they'll still put a whoppin on us all. It's not just the seed.

If you don't have the weather going for ya it really doesn't matter what the seed is or who is growin it!!!

Seems to me that an experienced grower is not going to grow an unknown seed. Its rookie like me that get seeds that are unknown before we know how to go about getting good seed.

An experienced grower could do wonders with the seed I grew no doubt, especially in the right climate.

You will notice that the HH grow their own seed and the seed of other HH, unknown or not. Looking closer, you will also notice that genetically speaking, there isn't a lot of diversity, meaning that your own seed may be as good as any out there. Look at the WR seeds from the last four years, not much difference in the lineage, just the growers. Grow your own.

First off I'm a rookie grower. Started with 5 plants and the only one left with anything on it is the only PROVEN seed I grew. (1303 Sweet) I honestly think it all comes down to quality of the seed, soil preperation and luck.
