Thinking about using tilling radish for cover crop next year. Has anyone tried them before? Suppose to root deep and break up ground. Also may help with root rot and possibly bugs. I have terrible ground, really prone for rotting of vine plants. Lost all four of my Ags this year. Two to rot and the outher two to bugs. Any suggestions for the use of radishes?

I'm going to be planting radishes and maybe winter rye in a couple of weeks. I'll post my progress.

Guys My understanding is that the radishes are toxic to cucurbits. I was advised not to use radish as a cover crop with pumpkins. Apparantly not compatible...

I have read the opposite that radishes and pumpkins are excellent companion plants...radishes and nasturtiums are supposed to help repel cuke beetles

I just tried seeding them this week. I guess I will find out by next year.

Here's some that I was looking into last winter http://tillageradish.com/radish-blends/radish-blends.php there is one grower on here that had some posts in his diary a year or two ago on using them. I'm sorry I cant remember who. May be he will chime in.

I planted White Icicle Radish around my plants a few years ago because I read that they repel squash bugs. I never had squash bugs and I let them grow all season and then threw them in the compost.

They worked great for me last year as Mr Schweigert mentioned. My best pumpkin this year so far is growing in that area. I mixed Groundhog tillage radishes with some oats and Austrian winter peas. Plant the radishes at 5 to 10 pounds per acre. If your patch is 600 ft2 2.2oz of radishes would equal 10 lbs/ac. You should add some N to get the radishes started. By spring they are gone and the soil had nice tilth. I am getting ready to seed some this weekend where I pulled out two plants that would not pollinate.
