Is a heavy pumpkin the product of steady growth from day one or can it thicken internally without showing significant external (OTT) growth. My 1079 OTT has been up and down the past 2 weeks. Some days I measure up to 35# of growth and others 15-20. What has definately happened is that it thumps very solid at this point whereas about 1 week ago it was echoing and its getting its ribs. thanks jeff

No response, that's kind of curious...are all you heavy hitter sitting back laughing at this one? Because I'm kind of curious to what the answer is too.

Put a mold on it that makes it smaller. lol Kind of like how they make square watermelon.

They gradually get a little thicker through the season, I would say it is likely at a somewhat constant rate.
Quit measuring every day. go every 3 or 4, especially as it gets bigger. Rolling average is more consistent and easier on the blood pressure.

Last year, I set up the tripod and scale over what became my 1065. It gained its final 100lbs with no measurable growth. My conclusion is they can gain % heavy in those last couple weeks. Or at least mine did. :-)

I sometimes wonder if high heat can contribute to heavier pumpkins. If you go back and look at weighoffs in Kentucky, tennessee & North Carolina every pumpkin almost always goes way above charts
