I lost my 1421 stelts around day 20 never could get a second controlled cross to take now I'm left with one open pol on a secondary and if that aborts I am Done on that plant. That makes 3 plants- my 3 best- that will be open pollinated. The heat crushed me and I sense that I am not alone. Will this be a year of many open crosses at weighoffs and fewer new seeds to choose from next year? I think so.

Your not alone. I lost 2 main vine fruits on my 1495 Stelts and had a bes on my 319 Mohr. Now I have open pollinations on side vines on both plants. It will be tough to hit 1 k this year for me and probably many others. I am expecting a smaller turnout at the weigh off in October.

The same problems here. Three aborts on our 943 Lengel, plus one female dried up before pollination. Pollinated a side vine flower on Weds. I hope it takes if not the plant will be pulled. It may be pulled anyway! Two aborts on the 1320 Snyder with the third one looking good so far. Also a couple aborts on the 1333 Dodge.
The only plant with a descent pumpkin on is our 1216 DiMarco at day 22 today.( I hope it keeps going.)
Deb and I were away for a few days so tomorrow morning I will be in the patch checking and measuring. We did get about an inch of rain while we were away.

If it wasn't for June 24-25, I wouldn't have any pumpkins going either. That was a less hot period in between two heat waves, and the only dates I was able to get controlled pollinations to take. Luckily almost all my plants had females ready on those two days.

a lot of growers thanks to our green squash champion are placing coolers over a newly pollinated greenie to promote a better chance at pollination success. just wondering out loud if thats something that could be done with pumpkins during days of high heat? we really did not loose any pollinations this year even during the high heat days but then again, we dont get days and days of high heat like some of you. i think though that if i tried the cooler method? id add a medium sized cup of frozen water under the cooler as well? pap

No pollination on the 943 Lengel. Pulling it out of the patch tomorrow! Cover crops to follow.

Lots of aborts here to.. many on the second sets so it has been all or nothing. Pulled my 1067 Box today. The first pollination aborted, nothing else set in the heat and the plant was yellowing up. I hope the neighboring 440's I have fill in the spot but its getting late for that to with minimal secondary growth at this point.

Scottie, are you really done?
I've had a few problems with aborts this year too, I'm assuming the heat has been the problem this year.

Hey James I might still be able to use some of that sand I might not be done setting pumpkins this year. My only question is, is the sand in bags?
