last night during a strong storm, my main had a horizontal split. i am trying to get it out past ten to set a squash--am i better off treating and burying, or should i cut my losses and train the secondary? my choice will also be pending what it looks like when i get to it today.

I'm no expert, but I've had some storm damage similar to this on secondaries. It seems if the horizontal crack is less than half way around the stem, and if it dries, the remaining stem can take up the function lost from the crack. Just my own limited experience and observations.

My 1306 jutras had this happen about a week ago. Curt is right, don't bury it, mine was filleted open pretty bad and it's looking decent now by using captan and a fan. I'm trying something different by taking zip ties and gradually closing the split back up also.

I have fixed many with good results every time.
I clean the split with a very mild solution of clorox and water and then seal the split with melted paraffin.
Never lost a repaired vine yet.
