kenny
growth is a tad slow the first week, by the midway point in the second week? you should be able to see a visual difference every morning,by the end of week three?(or possibly a few days longer?) you should hit 80 inchs in circ--- then, the daily avg of lbs gained should escalate for close to a month, then hopefully hold peak growth from between 3 to 4 weeks ( three weeks at the peak growth is good but four weeks at peak growth? ya got something special)
its all down hill from there. daily averages of growth will continue to drop until fruit is done growing.( this is another case where the great ones growth tapers down much slower than the also ran pumpkin) we all hope this does not happen until pickin time.
one last thing kenny and all. i strongly suggest taping and recording only once per week. you are much less apt to make mistakes and wont get tied up in the daily growth. just take a seven day average, your nerves will thank you for it. pap
80 inches was always my bench mark for liftoff. how fast it gets there determines a lot on how the rest of the season will go for that pumpkin.
handy, rons 1161 last season was slow outta the gate but ended up taping over 1,700 pounds.

Hey Pap, how about when your deciding which pumpkin to cull?, do you take daily measurement then? I have a tough decision to make ,and daily measurements seem to give me some reassurance that I'm going to make the right one. Or at least I hope so. lol Terry

terry we dont usually measure early because we make our choices quickly after pollination is assured.by that i mean we let our eyes do the measuring early on. in most cases our keeper is choosen, set up amd cleared out for growing when its still football shaped.( we do keep a backup farther down the line just in case but, 99 percent of the time our methods have not failed us)
a lot of thought goes into which fruit we keep.we usually end up pollinating three on the main of each plant.if all angles are good and all shapes are good? then yes the most agressive is usually the keeper.
just remember that first pollination should be larger because its earlier and also gets the juice first down the pipe.its not always the best pumpkin choice.
we will take a later pollination if we like the shape, natural angle off the main, location on the plant, segment uniformity, etc. lots to consider. pap
