Having a limited area to grow in I usually let my plants grow beyond the patch into areas where rooting is most likely not going to happen. This got me questioning if the extra growth is an advantage because of the extra leaf area or if it is a disadvantage because the plant can't pull moisture and nutrients from the soil beyond the patch. Anyone have an opinion?

My opinion is that the extra leaf area is a benefit. You can add nutrients through foliar spraying and cut back the extra leaves in the early fall.

I Do the same thing, I used to wonder if it was a good idea or not too. Then I saw Dale M's diary last year. he does it too, so it couldn't be that bad if he can grow a 1723 that way.
