I have my first pollination and have trained the vine away from the pumpkin. There is lots of room in my patch for me to continue growing out the vine. However, there must be a point where too much vine growing occurs at the expense of the energy going into the pumpkin.

I have always made the mistake of keeping plants to small, I would say the smallest you should go to reach full potential is 500 sq ft.

Agree 450-600 sqFt is plenty of plant, lots of guys keep the main growing all season just training it around exterior of patch others deadhead main a few feet past fruit, honestly I don't know what's better this year ill deadhead main on one plant about 10 ft past fruit other ill continue to grow till end of season just to see

I was looking at Mark Lomnbardis Diary from lat year and he did a pitch fork pattern where he cut the main vine right at the pumpkin then he let the tertiaries grow forwardoff of the last secondary on each side. This Makes it really easy to manage the fruit and it keeps all of the late growth behind the fruit instead of having to back feed from beyond the fruit. What are peoples thoughts on how this would affect pumpkin size?
