My 1566 Rodonis is tossing me a double vine I was wondering what my options are? Can a big kin still be grown off a double vine plant? Once it gets out and is layed down am I best to cut it and train next secondary that's normal as new main or cut plant and hope backup I planted yesterday beside it grows normal? I was really looking forward to growing this plant cause of the results its grown last few years so I'd really hate to cut it thanks Dave

I would say yes, the main vine should split into two singles mains. All you need to do is cut one off. If it doesn't split on its own a little surgery on the tip should allow you to remove one of the growing points. If either of these fail go with a side vine for the new main.

It has been said that a world class giant pumpkin has never been grown on a plant that has shown a double or ribbon vine. I've seen more than my fair share, and every single one of them has been a disappointment. I usually see 250 pounds max with double-viners. Also, the walls are usually very thin.

Even if the plant "comes out of it" and the vine appears somewhat normal, the plants I've seen continue to show "weirdness" with plant parts in odd places and some vines start to double again...

If you have two plants planted in one site (that's what I do) then always cull the double-viner, no matter what it's parentage. If you have no backup, then it's a matter of how much time you want to waste caring for this plant.

Sorry to be so blunt, but I gotta call 'em like I see 'em .

Sometimes things happen, or other things...you never know. Have a look at pipsters diary

He grew a 385 kg (kg! not lbs) pumpkin on a double viner, and if he hadn´t had to harvest the beauty because of flooding, I suspect it might have hit the 500 kg.

1295 and 1065 off of doublevines, once they hit the ground give them a bunch of water and some nitrogen, in hopes that the vines splits into two seperate vines, if that doesn't work try surgery on the growing tip, if that doesn't work cut main and train a secondary as the new main. Of course this is only if you really want to grow the 1566 if you have a backup it may be best to go with that.

Dave, ive got a flat vine plant that threw two leaves at the 3rd true leaf spot and now has three at the growth tip. When I can get into that three leaf cluster better(as it grows) I'll cut the tip off and go with a secondary as the main.Ive got extra plants as backups but I really like this ones genetics

I agree with what Minnesota chad said. Grew 1427.5 last year off a double vine.

Cliff is 100% right about a double viner,i have grew 2 double viners in the pass in the back 40 and set kins on both vines and found the longer vine kin grows at 60 per cent and the shorter one 40 or more.Cutting off the smaller kin did not help the larger one grow faster on both plants. The plants must be set up to produce this way. This is only my thinking.

1175 on double vine...trimmed to single after allowing it to grow ten feet or so. Flat vines are NOT the same.
