i use a spray bottle and verbal commands. lol real answer. you want your main vine (1st vine) to go down the center of your plot, fanning off first set of vines that come of this. personally I trim every 2nd vine from the ground were your stump is to 3' down the main for spacing. let side vine get between 9'-15' then end them, trim off any vines that come of the first set of side vines. this is a general answer, everyone does it a little different.

I agree with Clubber Lang, and get some bamboo sticks to hold vines in place. The 2ndary vines off the main will need to be perpendicular to the main (like a series of crosses). There are a ton of patterns, but that is a good basic. Luke

Electric shock collar works really well... center the main vine in the direction you want it to grow and train the secondaries to go perpendicular with the main. Trim/prune and tertiaries.
Go to the dollar store and buy some plastic hangers. Cut them in half to make staples to hold your vines in place until they are well rooted

When pruning every leaf node will have a leaf, a flower, a tendril, and a tertiary vine. You can pinch of the tertiery vine bud before it even starts to grow which will save you from actually getting in there and pruning with a cutting instrument. Here is a photo. It is a little out of focus but it will give you an idea what you are looking at.

1ton, at each leaf node the vine will produce a root. bury that leaf node with some soil and it will also grow a root out of the top of the vine which will follow the mounded soil in an arc and eventually grow down into your garden
