Last year we had an extremely hot summer. I had a terrible time with leaves getting burn holes up to 4 inches in diameter. What can I do to prevent this sun burn. Shading doesn't make sense as the plant needs sun!!!

I should mention that I likely over did it with nitrogen wich caused some curling also.

I had ALOT of sunburn last year also....but I think it was a combination of warm weather and WAY too much N2 in my case. I'd actually lean more towards the N2.

I had that last year too. That's why I switched to a low water sprinkler so I could cool the plant.

joe, its common to get burn on the newer leaves because they are tender and not fully developed. the heat rising off the soil can do as much damage to these leaves as the sun.
burn on older leaves however is a horse of a different color. we have not experienced leaf burn on older established leaves - ever.
is it possible your spraying insecticide and/or growth products onto the leaves early a.m.and as the sun gets hotter the leaves are burning? --- this would cause major burn on hot days.for that reason we spray around 5-6pm in the evening.

Joe, here is a good read for leaf scorch.

Besides the other things that cause leaf burn like Pap mentioned, I also used to think that a access of
N nitrogen would caused leaf burn, but I guess according to this article, that isn't the case at all.
