Anne Verhallen – Soil Management Specialist – OMAFRA: From Soil Tests to Soil Structure, Getting the Most from your Soil

Anne Verhallen graduated from the University of Guelph in 1985 with a B.Sc.(Agr.), majoring in Soil Science. She joined the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs as a Soil Conservation Advisor, working in and around Southern Ontario. Most of her early work focused on soil conservation and soil management in field and horticultural crops. Currently, Anne works in the area of horticultural soil management with project interests in cover crops, compaction, crop rotation, fertility, irrigation scheduling and soil health.

During her presentation at the IGVGC in Niagara Falls, Ontario Anne will explain why a good understanding of soil management is the key to production since soil is so incredibly varied and diverse. She will cover topics such as soil fertility testing, nutrient interactions, soil organic matter, drainage, aeration and techniques for managing and maintaining your soil’s productivity.

She asks that if you wish to bring a current soil test with you to the presentation she will gladly help you interpret what it is telling you – better yet, scan your test and email it to Pumpkinfest headquarters ([email protected]) so we can forward it to Anne ahead of time. This will provide her with plenty of time to peruse it and make informed recommendations at the event.
