im just kickin this around to see what others think..what about cutting a slit in your stumps while the vines are still growing and the stump is young and healthy? i would think it would heal quicker before everything gets mushy and maybe prevent problems later in the season..what ya think?

id be afraid of squash vine boarers getting into the base. then again possibly a small hole might help ? not sure.

Isnt that like amputating a leg to prevent it from becoming sick before it happens? I would check it daily and not act untill i as sure something is wrong. Mutilating the stump in healthy condition seems like inviting problems in to me.

are plants with longitudinal vine splits less likely to foam? I believe the 1810 Stevens had several vine splits from early hail damage. Does the calousing of the stem create a stronger "pipe" that is less likely to leak, get infected and then foam? interesting theory.

thats kinda what im thinkin farmer ben.a small slice maybe a quarter inch by maybe two inches into the stem cavity early on would heal up and scare over in a couple days. when its to late then you have all that rot to deal with.

With race horses you worry about proud flesh around an open wound . It may restrict movement . Simiary in my opinionm scar tissue in the plant would restrict energy flow to the rest of the plant.
