I know the seed I will be growing, it is out of a pumpkin I grew. Yesterday I went thru 250 seeds, I got it down to 25. Do you look for anything in a seed before you plant it? size, color, most perfect looking? any kind of rituals you go thru, seance's, healer visits, shamans approval?

If I had a bunch of seeds from the same pumpkin I would plant 5 or 6 of them in peat pots and keep the strongest plant.

Thats my plan. I have never went thru every seed and picked the best one (250 of them) , I usually just grab. I was just wondering if anybody had any technique's to picking them.

If I am short on seeds like last year (2-4 of each), I literally just closed my eyes and put my hand in a bag and pulled one out. If I have plenty like with my own cross I am growing next year, I'll do what Captain said.
You can't base anything on what the seed looks like. The 1059 VMG was an uglier seed, and not uniform in color or even that big compared to some of the robust caramel seeds out there. It grew me a beautiful pumkin though.

I'm trying something this year.I'm weighting my seeds, and you would be amazed at the difference. Two seeds will look the same, length, width ect.but totally different weights.Do I know why? no But you know which one I will grow!By the way ,the scale I use is the one hunters and shooters use to measure powder, when reloading, measures in grains.A'm I crazy maybe! but then again maybe not! Yes sir, my super duper 898knauss everything seed. 1128Beauchemin (1566Rodonis x 998Pukos)x 340Beauchemin (503Beauchemin it is a 898knauss remake x 898knauss) that made the 224Brouillard, then I crossed the 751Mudd into it. 224Brouillard x 751Mudd (751mudd is the opposite cross of the 898knauss)and I got 110Brouillard. Yes, the seeds are out of the 110Brouillard10 (224Brouillard x 751Mudd) next year I will cross the Henkin11 into it. Henkin11 into it. Henkin11 is 800Henkin x 1677Hunt, 800Henkin is 1375Liggett x 689Beauchemin, has 4 generations of 898knauss, alot of 898Knauss in the 1677Hunt also.

I try to pick the seed that grows fast and continues to grow throughout the season. If they have any genetic flaws in them I try to stay far away.

I really like the genetics of the 1596 Wallace. Ive planted that seed 2 years in a row have gotten the same traits. It seems that that seed produces pumpkins that go heavy also it has a single rib that bulges out thats thicker then the rest of the pumpkin. I've seen this both years i've planted it. After cutting the fruit open it always had a lot of seeds and the insides where always healthy. I wish more people would plant that seed. The genetics are proven to grow heavy 1161x1068. What a seed!

I usually look for the plumpest uniform colored seeds...but I really like Terry's weighing idea...now where's that old Coke-a-Cola scale? LOL!
