I water in the late afternoon or early evening because I have a day job and can't possibly make it out to the patch prior to going to work. I water through drip tape and have yet to see an advantage to overhead watering. I also use a Stihl to apply foliar nutrients.

late afternoon or early evening, for three reasons: 1) Nicely warm water available from a barrel (and after watering I fill it up and let it stand in the sun to warm up until the next evening for next watering), 2) still some hours warm outside to allow for the leaves will dry and 3) less evaporation than during daytime, therefore more water will reach the roots and less water will get back up to the soil surface to evaporate (and minerals will be washed down to the roots, not up to the surface).

In the spring with small plants still inside hoops I use warm water in the morning. If normal spring to early summer temps I water in the morning overhead. If hot temps then I water with a larger droplet misting head on intervals lengths correlated to heat from 9 to 5 which cools and waters at same time. Once july hits I water with an overhead raintower sprinkler for 1 to 2 hours in the morning, then multiple times during the day dendent on temps and rain. Also once mid august on I am not pulling weeds but maintaining them below the leaf canopy with scissors once per week. These weeds also are using up moisture so I will take this into account.

Moist but not wet. No cool water in early spring. Stay consistant. Cool soil and plants in the high heat while watering at the same time. Try not to have any wet leaves at dusk. If less disease pressure, water more than you think you should, and then water some more. Lol. Much depends on your soil make up. Less water for clayey soils and more for sandy.

I water all day, I stop a few hours before night. I want my plants to have time to dry out before they go into the night. (I am low tech, I use ordinary lawn and garden overhead sprinklers, not a drip set up.)

early morning is ng. why? because if there is dew on the leaves (which usually there is early a.m.) and any spores of mildew ,etc are on leaves(and they can be especially mid to end of season ), then all your doing is splashing spores around the garden and onto the soil.
wewater late morning once leaves are dry. then if needed? again mid afternoon or around 5 pm

in the morning because in a greenhouse the humidity get too high if you wait until the later part of the day this wat the plants dry out well. In a green house we don't have the issues Pap mentioned

In the summer I started watering around 11:00 this last season rather than morning. I found that temperatures on average started getting pretty warm by 11:00 and the plants seemed to like the cooling down around that time. After the main watering at 11:00 I mist the plants every 20 minutes until 4:30.

Twice a day here, during the heat of the day. Around noon and 3:00. With temps between 90 and 102 F, we gotta do something to combat heat stress.

10am,11am,12pm,1pm,2pm,3pm for 5-6 minutes every day (auto)
Approx 150 gal total. 5gal/min from the spigot X 5min X 6x = 150 gal overhead. I should put the sprinkler in the bucket for a minute to be sure I still get the 5 gal/min...there's always next season...LOL!
